The council members participate actively in conferences, seminars and meetings that have relevance for Denmark and internationally. The members of the Council meet once a month to discuss proposed laws, relevant activities and current issues. The Council responds to requests in relation to new legislation and participates in the public debate in the media. The Council also takes initiatives for specific actions and projects, especially regarding the integration effort. The Council for Ethnic Minorities follows developments within the area of foreign and integration affairs, and keeps itself updated on affairs in the Municipal Councils of Integration. The Minister of Integration Affairs can also request statements from the Council concerning specific issues and action plans. The Council meets with the Minister of Integration Affairs every three months to discuss current problems, new initiatives and legislation within the area. The task for the Council of Ethnic Minorities is to advise the Minister of Integration Affairs in matters of significance for refugees and immigrants in Denmark. The Council is served by the secretariat of the Ministry of Refugees, Immigration and Integration Affairs. The members come from the Municipal Councils of Integration. The Council for Ethnic Minorities has been in existence since 1999 and consists of 14 members with minority backgrounds.
